Engulfing candles: the body is not the whole range.

Check body coverage and high–low coverage separately, and keep the preceding context in the observation.

One question to answerCan a pair engulf the body while leaving the earlier high untouched?

What is actually happening?

Body engulfing compares the open-to-close price intervals of two candles. Full-range engulfing compares their high-to-low intervals. A second candle can cover one interval without covering the other; a pattern name does not remove the earlier wick extreme.

Keep the boundary clear. Body coverage describes two completed intervals. It does not establish what every previous seller did.

Body engulfing is not range engulfing

Compare body endpoints first, then compare the outer wicks separately.

Restart & example assumptions

Authored synthetic observations, shown in sequence. Every comparison uses only the revealed data. This is a worked learning example, not live prices, broker execution or a profitability backtest. Follow the article’s exact definitions; measurements and pattern names alone do not authorize a trade.

For charts: tap a candle or swing to inspect it; drag horizontally to browse; wheel or +/− to zoom; arrow keys to inspect; Home to restore the step view.

Make the conditions explicit.

01 / CONTEXT

Declare the body or range definition, permitted equality and price feed before selecting examples. Keep the preceding decline or range visible.

02 / TRIGGER

In this bullish body example, require the second open below the first close and the second close above the first open. Separately compare both highs and lows.

03 / CANCEL OR INVALIDATE

Do not report full-range engulfing if the second high is below the first high. Any later trading hypothesis needs its own invalidation condition.

The quoted rules are illustrative research specifications. Parameters are not recommendations and have not been presented as profitable backtest results.

What can this cost?

The larger body can leave a wider stop distance. A more dramatic shape does not automatically provide an acceptable cash-risk or exit-distance relationship.

Calculate the size from your assumptions

How the idea can fail.

An engulfing body in the middle of a range can be followed by another overlapping candle rather than continuation.

Practical habit

Draw two brackets: body interval and total range. Answer each comparison before discussing direction.

Go one level deeper

Use a consistent treatment of gaps and market sessions. Do not mix different definitions after the sample is selected.
