Breakout and retest: price does not owe you a second entry.

Define a reference, breakout event, return band and response. Count the missing retest instead of manufacturing it.

One question to answerWhat if price continues without returning to your retest band?

What is actually happening?

A breakout, a return toward the reference and the subsequent response are different events. One can occur without the next. A plan that requires a retest remains untriggered when the retest never appears.

Keep the boundary clear. A missing entry is a valid process outcome. Do not redraw the rule to avoid admitting that no trade occurred.

A breakout can leave without you

Wait for the declared return band and a completed hold response. Missing the return means no retest entry.

Restart & example assumptions

Authored synthetic observations, shown in sequence. Every comparison uses only the revealed data. This is a worked learning example, not live prices, broker execution or a profitability backtest. Follow the article’s exact definitions; measurements and pattern names alone do not authorize a trade.

Make the conditions explicit.

01 / CONTEXT

The source lesson starts with an earlier upper reference near 110. Decide whether it is a line or a band and preserve that choice before the candidate move.

02 / TRIGGER

For a numerical extension, require a close above 110, then a later return into 109.80–110.20 and a pre-defined hold response. Record each stage only when observed.

03 / CANCEL OR INVALIDATE

Cancel a retest-only entry if the expiry arrives without a return, or if price closes back inside under the chosen invalidation rule.

The quoted rules are illustrative research specifications. Parameters are not recommendations and have not been presented as profitable backtest results.

What can this cost?

Waiting may produce no trade or a different available fill. Chasing a move because the expected retest is absent changes the original rule.

Calculate the size from your assumptions

How the idea can fail.

A return can close below the earlier reference rather than hold above it. Naming that return a retest does not make it bullish confirmation.

Practical habit

Save a decision-time screenshot and log “no retest” as an honest outcome.

Go one level deeper

Report triggered, failed and untriggered candidates in separate denominators. Do not move the band after the completed chart reveals an attractive return.

Check your understanding

Your retest band is 109.80–110.20. After breakout, the lowest observed price is 111. What occurred?
